Polish Application

Polish Application - The application of polish, usually after stripping

Equipment:

  • Polish applicator and tray or thoroughly clean mop and wringer bucket (rayon mops are best)
  • Warning Sign – “cleaning in progress”
  • Floor Polish
  • Floor Fan (optional)
Method:
  1. Put out warning signs and close off area if necessary
  2. Strip or scrub floor, ensure floor is no higher than 7-9ph when floor is ready for seal/polish
  3. Neutralise floor with acid product or flood rinse until ph value is correct as above.
  4. Apply (2) coats of seal if the floor is porous as steps 5-7
  5. Partly fill bucket, (insert bin bag if dirty), wring out mop. Applicator - Partly fill tray.
  6. Apply a thin, even coat of polish to the floor in sections using straight strokes (applicator) or figure-of-eight strokes (mop), overlapping each stroke.
  7. Allow polish to dry (using floor fan if desired after 10 minutes) for about 30 minutes until dry to the touch and not sticky.
  8. Apply second thin coat of polish at right angles to the first. If using a product that does not dry shiny then buffing between coats is needed.
  9. Apply additional coats of polish if more protection or a deaper shine is required.
  10. Do not allow traffic over the the area until completely dry (24hrs).
  11. Clean equipment and pads and remove warning sign when floor is completely dry
Beware:
  • As a rule of thumb, the more you pay for a seal or polish the longer it will last and the easier it will be to maintain.
  • Cheaper products will usually not level as well as better products and may cause 'orange peal'.
  • Never use a mop that has been used for other purposes or the floor will be streaky.
  • Do not pour polish into a dirty bucket or the floor will be dull, line the bucket with a bin bag.
  • If the floor is recoated before it is dry it will be dull.
  • Do not put a floor fan on too soon or ripples may be left in the finish.
